Mary K. McDonald
I have been a partner with McCarthy McDonald Schulberg & Joy since October 1996. I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1970 and from Duquesne University Law School Evening Division in 1979. I am a founding member of the Collaborative Law Association of Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Throughout my career I have focused my practice in the area of Family Law. I was the first staff attorney for Children Youth and Families, representing the agency in Juvenile Court and conducting in house training. Thereafter I was an Assistant County Solicitor representing Plaintiffs in cases originating under the Uniform Reciprocal Enforcement of Support Act (URESA) while continuing my representation of CYF in Juvenile Court.
From 1982 through 1989 I was a Hearing Officer with the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, conducting hearings which established, modified and enforced child and spousal support. I also supervised the other hearing officers and was involved in developing and implementing court procedures in the area of support.
From 1989-1996 I was associated with the Matrimonial Law Group at ReedSmith, representing clients in all aspects of matrimonial litigation and negotiation.
During my career, I have participated as a lecturer for many organizations, including the Allegheny County Bar Association (ACBA) and the Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI), in the areas of Support, Custody, Equitable Distribution, Protection from Abuse and Juvenile Law. I have also provided pro bono services to KidsVoice, the Allegheny County Bar Association Foundation, the pro se program of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County, Veterans’ Legal Clinic, Legal Resources for Women and Orphans’ Court in contested termination cases. I served on the committee of the Orphans’ Court to revise the local rules governing adoptions.
I served on the ACBA Judiciary Committee (2 terms)and am currently on the Board of Governors where I was instrumental in establishing the Collaborative Law Committee in 2011. I am a member of the Women in Law Section, the Juvenile Law Committee (1980 to present and previously Vice-chair and Chair of the Committee) the Family Law Section (where I am is currently the Chair elect, having previously been the Treasurer and Secretary as well as on Council), Lawyer’s Insurance Committee, vice-chair of Lawyer Referral Service and serve as liason from the Board of Governors to the Collaborative Law Committee and the Asian Attorneys committee. I am a Fellow of the Allegheny County Bar Foundation.
I currently serve on the Pittsburgh Commission on Human Relations. I have served on the Seton-LaSalle Catholic High School Board of Directors and the Shuman Juvenile Detention Board of Advisors.
