Sherrie R. Abney
Licensed in Oklahoma in 1988 and Texas in 1990, my areas of litigation practice were family law, real estate, probate, and general practice. As a trained mediator and arbitrator, I became interest in collaborative law and trained as a family collaborative lawyer in 2000. In 2004, several other Dallas attorneys and I decided to move CL into other areas of civil disputes. We formed the Texas Collaborative Law Council, Inc. (TCLC). As chair of the ADR Section of the Dallas Bar Assoication, I began a Collaborative Law Study Group in 2002 which became the Collaborative Law Section of the Dallas Bar in 2005. I have planned and participated in four two day trainings in civil collaborative law for The Dallas Bar, TCLC and the Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism in Austin, Texas. I currently work with solicitors in the U.K. to move collaborative law into their civil practice. After having authored a book, 'Avoiding Litigation, A Guide to Civil Collaborative Law,' I developed a number of brochures for various areas of the collaborative process. I have participated as a presenter in training the trainers at the IACP Forum in San Diego; chaired the civil subcommittee which developed protocols of practice for consideration by IACP members and presented at the last two forums and the Summer Harvest held in Dallas.

| Training Offered |
Trainings can consist of one half day to up to two days focusing on civil collaborative law. Depending upon the audience, the subject matter generally consists of the following: Civil Protocols of Practice; Civil Participation Agreement; How to use the Addendum to the PA; Addressing difficult situations, i.e. multiparty cases, in-house counsel, firewalls, withdrawal provisions, handling difficult clients, negotiation skills, enrolling the client, marketing, starting a practice group, ethical consideration; thinking out of the box, and neutral communication.
Depending on the emphasis desired, I have trained with other attorney and mental health professionals. Just as the process must be designed for the clients, training must be designed for the needs of the participants. I employ PowerPoints, flipcharts, role play, and various forms of interaction with the participants.
